Selectividad preparation in Maths and Physics

In Catalonia the university entrance exam is the PAU, the Proves d'Accés a la Universitat, which almost every family still calls la Selectivitat. Two subjects decide the science and technology route: Matemàtiques II and Física. Those two are exactly what this academy was built to teach.

The structure

How the PAU is actually scored

Families lose more marks to the scoring structure than to the mathematics. It is worth being precise about it, because the structure decides where preparation time is best spent.

The fase general is compulsory. It carries Catalan, Castilian, a foreign language, History or History of Philosophy, and one modality subject. For students on the science and technology track that modality subject is Matemàtiques II. For the social sciences track it is Matemàtiques aplicades a les Ciències Socials. Física is not in the fase general.

The nota d'accés runs from 0 to 10 and is built from the Bachillerato average at 60 per cent and the fase general average at 40 per cent. This is the mark that decides whether a student clears the bar for a degree at all.

The fase específica is voluntary and is where a student climbs. Up to three modality subjects can be sat, each marked from 0 to 10. A mark of 5 or above becomes eligible for a ponderació, a weighting of 0.1 or 0.2 set by each degree. The two best weighted results are added on top.

That gives the nota d'admissió, up to 14: a nota d'accés of at most 10, plus at most 4 more from two subjects weighted at 0.2. Competitive degrees in Barcelona are won and lost in those four points.

The arithmetic in one line

nota d'admissió = (0.6 × Bachillerato) + (0.4 × fase general) + (a × M1) + (b × M2), where a and b are 0.1 or 0.2 and M1, M2 are the two best qualifying marks. Ceiling: 14.

Weightings are set per degree and per university, and they are republished each year. Always check the current official ponderacions table for the exact degrees on your list: Canal Universitats, ponderacions. We do this with families in the first consultation rather than leaving it to guesswork.

Matemàtiques II

The subject that counts twice

Matemàtiques II is the only subject on the science track that sits on both sides of the calculation. It is examined in the fase general, so it feeds the nota d'accés. And because a modality subject marked 5 or above is eligible for the ponderació without sitting the paper again, the same mark can also be weighted into the nota d'admissió.

One paper, two effects. That is why we treat Matemàtiques II as the highest-leverage hour in a Bachillerato 2 student's week, and why a student who is merely passing it is usually leaving more on the table than they realise.

What we cover: the álgebra lineal block (matrices, determinants, systems, and the discussion of a parametric system, which is where careless candidates lose whole questions), geometria a l'espai (vectors, lines and planes, distances and angles), anàlisi (limits, continuity, differentiability, optimisation, integration and areas), and probabilitat with the normal distribution and confidence intervals.

Where marks actually go missing: discussing a system without justifying the rank argument, optimisation answers that never verify the maximum, integration by parts set up in the wrong order, and geometry solved correctly but written without the reasoning the mark scheme pays for. We teach the writing as deliberately as the method, because the PAU pays for justification.

Física

Where the ponderació lives

Física sits in the fase específica. For engineering, physics, mathematics, architecture and most health sciences degrees it typically carries the full 0.2 weighting, which makes it one of the most efficient marks a science student can chase: it is a subject they are already studying, and it converts directly into admission points.

What we cover: camp gravitatori and camp elèctric treated as one idea rather than two memorised formula sets, ones i so, òptica física including interference and diffraction, electromagnetisme and induction, and física moderna, from the photoelectric effect through relativity and nuclear physics.

How the paper behaves: Física rewards a student who names the governing principle before reaching for the calculator, keeps units and orders of magnitude honest, and answers the qualitative parts in full sentences. Those qualitative parts are marks that strong students routinely give away because they were rehearsing numerical drill instead.

For students who take both, Matemàtiques II and Física taught by the same tutor is a real advantage: the vector work, the calculus, and the graph reading are one skill set, and we can stop teaching them twice.

The four points

What a ponderació is actually worth

The abstraction hides how large the effect is, so here it is in numbers. Take a student whose Bachillerato average and fase general give a nota d'accés of 7.4, which on its own closes the door on the most competitive engineering and health science degrees in Barcelona.

  • Matemàtiques II at 8.0, weighted 0.2, adds 1.6
  • Física at 7.5, weighted 0.2, adds 1.5
  • Nota d'admissió: 10.5

Three points, from two subjects the student was already sitting. Nothing about that is exotic. It is the ordinary arithmetic of the system, and it is why targeted preparation in exactly these two subjects moves an application further than a broad, unfocused revision plan.

The reverse also holds. A weighted subject marked below 5 contributes nothing at all, so a near-miss in Física is not a small loss, it is the whole 1.5 points. Getting a wobbling subject over the line is often worth more than polishing a strong one.

How we work

Preparation built on the mark scheme

We start from a real paper, not a diagnosis form. A student sits a recent PAU paper under timed conditions in the first fortnight. We mark it against the published criteris de correcció, and the resulting error map, not a general impression, sets the term plan.

We teach to the mark scheme explicitly. Students see how a question is scored, including where the method marks sit and what a marker must be able to read to award them. This is the single fastest gain for a student who already understands the material and is still losing marks.

Timed sets, then error logging. Every block ends in a timed set under exam conditions, followed by a written log of the error patterns. Repeated errors get retaught, not repeated.

Parents see the calendar. A visible plan across the Bachillerato 2 year, mapped to the school's own assessment dates and the exam window, so pace and pressure points are legible rather than mysterious.

Sessions run one to one, or in small group classes where the timetable allows. Groups are sold on teaching time: more explanation and more guided practice in the room, at a pace one tutor can genuinely hold.

Language

Taught in English, examined in Catalan

Most of our students come from international, bilingual or concertado schools and are more fluent thinking about mathematics and physics in English than in Catalan. We do not fight that. Teaching runs in English.

The exam, however, does not. So the command vocabulary and notation of the actual papers are taught alongside the physics: raoneu, justifiqueu, deduïu, calculeu, enuncieu, and the decimal comma, the units conventions, and the phrasing the criteris de correcció expect back. A student who understands the mechanics but misreads the instruction loses marks that were already earned, and that is an avoidable, and quickly fixable, loss.

Family communication stays in clear English throughout, so parents are never reading a progress report in a fourth language.

Rest of Spain

EvAU and EBAU outside Catalonia

The name changes by comunidad; the framework does not. Outside Catalonia the same exam is the EvAU or EBAU, with the same fase general and fase específica structure, the same 0.1 and 0.2 ponderaciones, and the same nota de admisión ceiling of 14.

What differs is the paper: each comunidad sets its own, so question style, optionality and the published mark scheme vary. Preparation is built from the papers of the university the student will actually sit under. The mathematics and physics we teach are the same; the rehearsal is regional. Bachillerato 1 students who want the groundwork right a year early. This is the cheaper year to fix things in, and the one families most often skip.

Students repeating or re-sitting to raise a ponderació, where the whole job is converting a specific subject from below the line to comfortably above it.
