If your family is doing the IB Diploma in the United States, you have probably already run into the awkward part: finding a maths tutor near you who genuinely knows the IB is far harder than it should be. Tutors are everywhere. Tutors who can teach Analysis & Approaches or Applications & Interpretation to the standard the IB actually rewards are not. Parents search for an IB maths tutor, meet three well-qualified local people, and come away with a quiet feeling that none of them quite understood the question.
That feeling is usually correct, and it is not a criticism of those tutors. It is a supply problem with a simple cause: the United States is AP country. This guide explains why local supply is thin, sets out the specific things an IB tutor knows that a generalist usually does not, gives you the questions to ask before you commit, and covers the practical side of working with a Europe-based specialist from a US timetable.
Why the local supply is thin
Only a small minority of American high schools run the full IB Diploma programme. Far more offer AP, and AP is what the American university system, teaching workforce and tutoring market are built around. Add the SAT and ACT and you have a local market whose overwhelming demand is for AP Calculus, SAT Math, ACT Math and the state curriculum.
Tutors follow demand, as they should. A capable US maths tutor may have taught AP Calculus AB and BC for a decade, coached hundreds of students through SAT Math, and never once marked an IB script or read a subject guide. When an IB family calls, they are a strong mathematician who can certainly help with differentiation, so they say yes. Then they teach the mathematics, which is fine, and miss what the IB is measuring, which is not. Geography compounds it: even in cities with an IB school, the few tutors who have taught the programme are usually already booked by families at that school, so "near me" becomes a filter that removes almost everyone who knows the course.
The maths overlaps. The assessment does not.
Here is the trap that catches good tutors. There is real content overlap between AP Calculus and AA HL: limits, differentiation, integration, series. A tutor who knows calculus can help a student get an answer.
But an IB grade is not produced by getting answers. It is produced by getting answers in a specific format, on papers with a specific structure, under specific calculator rules, in the language of specific command terms, alongside a piece of coursework worth a fifth of the total. A tutor who knows only the mathematics improves the mathematics and leaves most of the available marks untouched. Students in this position often report the same thing: sessions feel productive, homework gets done, and the school grade does not move.
AA or AI, SL or HL
The first question a genuine IB tutor asks is which course the student is taking, and at what level. Analysis & Approaches is the algebra, calculus and proof track. Applications & Interpretation is the modelling, statistics and technology track. They are not easy and hard versions of the same subject, they are different disciplines with different papers, and a tutor who treats them as interchangeable has told you everything you need to know. Level matters just as much. HL carries extra content, an extra paper and a much heavier week-to-week load than SL, and the support a student needs is shaped by which one they are sitting. A tutor who cannot immediately tell you how HL differs from SL will not spot when a student is drowning in the HL-only material.
Paper 1, Paper 2 and Paper 3
IB maths is examined across separate papers with different rules, and each one demands a different kind of preparation.
In AA, Paper 1 is sat without a calculator. Every line of algebra has to be produced by hand, cleanly, at speed. Paper 2 allows the graphing calculator, and rewards knowing when to reach for it. In AI, technology is permitted throughout, which changes the preparation entirely: the skill being tested is choosing and interpreting the right tool rather than surviving without one.
At HL there is also Paper 3, a longer investigative paper built from a small number of extended, scaffolded problems that unfold over several parts. It is nothing like an AP free-response question and nothing like anything on the SAT. Students meet it cold, discover that stamina and problem-solving structure matter more than recall, and lose marks they could have kept. A tutor who has never prepared a student for Paper 3 cannot prepare yours.
The Internal Assessment
Every IB maths student writes an Internal Assessment, the mathematical exploration, and it is worth twenty per cent of the final grade at both SL and HL. It is marked against published criteria covering presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection and the use of mathematics, and those criteria are where the marks live.
This is the largest blind spot for a tutor from an AP background, because AP has no equivalent. The exploration is not a maths problem, it is assessed writing built around mathematics, and students lose marks for reasons unrelated to their mathematical ability: a topic too broad to finish, mathematics below the level of their course, notation used without definition, no genuine reflection, no personal voice. A specialist steers the topic choice early, which is when the grade is really decided, then works to the criteria rather than the maths alone.

The calculator point, which trips up US tutors specifically
American exam prep has moved decisively towards Desmos, because the digital SAT now has it built in. Tutors who live in that world develop excellent Desmos instincts and teach them, reasonably enough, as general calculator technique.
The IB exam room does not work that way. Students sit their calculator papers with an approved graphing display calculator, typically a physical handheld put into examination mode, and they need fluency in that specific device: its solver, its graphing menus, its statistics functions, its distribution tools. Desmos habits do not transfer to a locked-down handheld under time pressure, and a student who has only ever practised on a screen they will not be given is being trained for the wrong exam.
Command terms and where marks quietly disappear
The IB writes its questions in a controlled vocabulary, and each command term carries an instruction about how much work must be shown. "Write down" means the answer needs no working. "Show that" means the given result is not enough on its own, the route to it is the mark. "Hence" means you are required to use the previous part, and ignoring that instruction can cost marks even when the final answer is right. "Justify", "determine", "deduce", "sketch" and "draw" all mean different things and all set different expectations for what appears on the page.
Students who have not been taught this write good mathematics and score below what they know, answering the question they think was asked rather than the one the command term specified. Teaching that vocabulary explicitly is routine for an IB tutor and invisible to anyone who has never read a subject guide.
Grade boundaries and predicted grades
Two more pieces of context a generalist rarely has. First, IB grade boundaries are set after each session and move, and the mark needed for a 7 is usually well below what a US student conditioned by percentage grading expects. Knowing roughly where they sit changes strategy: which marks are worth chasing, which questions are safe to leave, and why a raw score should never be read as a school percentage.
Second, predicted grades matter. Your school submits a predicted grade for university applications, and it is built from internal assessments and mock exams, not from the final papers. That makes the mock cycle strategically important in a way no AP student experiences, and a tutor who does not know the calendar cannot help you plan around it.
What to ask a prospective tutor
Five questions, and you will know within a few minutes.
- Which IB maths courses have you taught, and at what level? Look for AA and AI named separately, with SL and HL distinguished without prompting.
- How would you approach my child's Internal Assessment? A specialist talks about criteria, topic scope and timeline. A generalist talks about doing a maths project.
- What changes between Paper 1 and Paper 2 in this course, and is there a Paper 3? This one is very hard to bluff.
- Which calculator will they use in the exam, and do you teach on it? The answer should be a specific approved handheld, not Desmos.
- How do you handle command terms and mark schemes? If the answer is vague, the tutor has never worked from an IB mark scheme.
Why online with a specialist beats in-person with a generalist
Parents naturally prefer in-person, and for younger children that instinct is right. At Diploma level the calculation changes, because the binding constraint is not proximity, it is expertise. The nearest tutor is drawn from whoever lives within driving distance. An online tutor is drawn from everyone who teaches the programme.

Making the time difference work
This is more workable than most US families expect, once you stop thinking in weekday evenings.
The useful window is US morning. Barcelona typically runs six hours ahead of the East Coast and nine ahead of the West Coast, so an 8am start in New York is a comfortable early afternoon in Spain, and a 7am start in California lands mid-afternoon. Neither side is working at an unreasonable hour.
In practice, weekend mornings are the easiest fit during term time, and they suit IB students anyway, since that is when the exploration and past-paper work actually get done. Early weekday mornings before school work well for older students who are sharp early. And summer, winter break and spring break intensives are the simplest fit of all, because the school timetable stops constraining things: a concentrated block of holiday sessions is often worth more than months of scattered hours, particularly for building Paper 3 stamina and getting the Internal Assessment properly under way before the school deadline.
