The right IB Maths or Physics specialist almost certainly does not live within driving distance of your house. Analysis and Approaches Higher Level, Applications and Interpretation, IB Physics HL: these are narrow specialities inside a narrow curriculum, and the number of people who genuinely know the syllabus, the command terms and the markschemes is small in any one city. Families in the US, Canada, the Gulf and Asia discover this quickly. The local tutor who is excellent at AP Calculus or at the national curriculum is often meeting the IB for the first time on your child's paper.
So online is not the second-best version of a local lesson. When the right specialist is not local, online is simply how you get access to them. But honesty matters more than enthusiasm here, because the time zone does not decide whether online works, it decides which format works. A weekday after-school slot from New York is a bad idea. A Saturday morning slot from New York is excellent. This guide explains the difference, what makes online maths and physics teaching genuinely effective, how to structure an IB term from another continent, and how to tell a good online tutor from a merely convenient one.
Start with the gap, not the calendar
Everything follows from one number: how many hours separate your child's free time from the tutor's working day. Measured against Barcelona time, the usual gaps are:
- US and Canada Eastern (New York, Toronto): 6 hours behind
- US Central (Chicago): 7 hours behind
- US Mountain (Denver): 8 hours behind
- US and Canada Pacific (Los Angeles, Vancouver): 9 hours behind
- UAE (Dubai, Abu Dhabi): 2 to 3 hours ahead
- India: 3 and a half to 4 and a half hours ahead
- Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia: 6 to 7 hours ahead
That list splits the world into two very different problems. For the Gulf and Asia the maths is easy: a student finishing school at 4pm in Dubai or Singapore is looking at an early or mid afternoon slot in Europe. Ordinary weekday lessons work all year, with no compromise on either side, and most of the warnings below do not apply to you.
For the Americas, the gap runs the wrong way, and that is where families need a straight answer.
What does not work: North American weekday evenings
The default request from a US or Canadian family is a weekday slot between 4pm and 8pm ET, because that is when a teenager is home and fed and not yet asleep. In Barcelona, that window is 10pm to 2am. Nobody teaches HL Physics well at midnight, and no serious specialist can sustain a term of it without the quality quietly falling apart.
Be sceptical of anyone who agrees to it cheerfully and permanently: either they are not really where they say they are, or you are booking the worst hours of somebody's week, and it will show in the teaching. A one-off emergency session the night before a mock is a different matter. A term-long timetable built on it is not realistic, and the honest thing is to say so before you start rather than three weeks in.
The second thing that does not work is treating online as a passive broadcast. A student who watches a specialist solve problems on screen for an hour feels reassured and learns very little. That is a format failure, not a technology failure.
What works well across a big gap
Weekend mornings are the answer for the Americas. This is the single most useful fact in this article. A Saturday 9am in New York or Toronto is 3pm in Barcelona. 10am ET is 4pm. Even the West Coast lines up: 8am in Los Angeles or Vancouver is 5pm in Barcelona, which is a perfectly normal teaching hour. Two fixed weekend slots, Saturday and Sunday, is enough to carry a full IB programme through the year, and weekends are also when a teenager is least exhausted and most able to think. Many families end up preferring it to a weekday scramble.
Summer and school holidays are where the time zone stops mattering at all. With no school day to work around, the whole European working day opens up. The gap between IB Year 1 and Year 2 is the highest-leverage window in the diploma: the only time a student can rebuild weak foundations without a syllabus moving underneath them. Two or three concentrated weeks in July or August often does more than a term of weekly lessons.
Block and intensive scheduling before exam sessions works for the same reason. Winter break, the run-in to January mocks, spring or Easter break, and the final stretch before the May papers are all periods when school stops and the calendar frees up. Structuring the year as steady weekend contact plus three intensive blocks is far more effective than trying to force an identical weekly hour through fifty-two weeks.
Asynchronous support is the part most families underrate, and it is where the time difference flips into an advantage. A student in Boston photographs a page of Paper 2 working at 9pm on Tuesday. It is marked in Barcelona while they sleep, with annotations against the official markscheme and a short recorded walkthrough of the two questions that went wrong. It is waiting before school on Wednesday. Sitting six hours apart makes that overnight turnaround natural rather than heroic. Marked past papers, annotated scripts and written feedback between live sessions can easily double the effective contact a student gets.
One practical warning: Europe and North America change their clocks on different dates, Europe in late October and late March, North America in early November and mid March. For a couple of weeks each spring and autumn the gap becomes five hours instead of six, so confirm the slot in both local times.
What makes online maths and physics genuinely effective
Subject matters here. Maths and physics translate to a screen better than almost anything else, because the work is the written page. What separates a good online session from a bad one:
A shared digital whiteboard that both people write on. Not a slide deck. An infinite canvas where the tutor writes a line, hands the pen over, and the student continues. If only one person ever writes, the session is a lecture.
The student works the problem live. The whole point of one-to-one is watching how a student thinks: where they set up the equation wrongly, which sign they drop, whether they read the command term. That only happens if they are doing the work while the specialist watches, interrupts and corrects in real time.
Screen-shared past papers and markschemes. IB grades are won on paper technique, so the actual paper should be on screen, marked against the actual markscheme, with the specialist showing exactly where the method marks sit.
Calculator work visible on screen. The GDC is half of IB Maths, and an on-screen emulator lets a specialist watch the keystrokes rather than guess at them. Bad calculator habits are invisible in a homework book and obvious on a shared screen.
Recorded sessions. Every lesson can be recorded and rewatched. A student revising in April can replay the February explanation of induction in the specialist's own words. No classroom offers that.
Visible progress for the parent. You should receive session notes, marked work and a clear view of what is improving and what is not. Distance is exactly why this has to be explicit rather than assumed.
Two honest tradeoffs. First, online asks more of the student's attention: a teenager alone with a laptop is easier to lose than one across a table, so camera on, working shown and pen on paper are non-negotiable. Second, the setup matters more than people expect. A stable connection, headphones and a way to show handwritten working, a phone stand over the page or a cheap graphics tablet, will do more for lesson quality than any software choice.

How to structure the year from another continent
A workable shape for a family six to nine hours away from Europe:
- September to October: one fixed weekend slot per week. The job is diagnosis and habit, not heroics. Establish what is genuinely secure and what only looks secure.
- October to November: overlay Internal Assessment support. IA work is naturally asynchronous, drafts and feedback rather than live teaching, so it fits the gap perfectly.
- December break: the first intensive block. School is out, the calendar opens, and this is the moment to close the topic gaps that the term exposed.
- January to February mocks: treat the mock papers as data. Full timed papers, marked hard, then a session per paper on where the marks actually leaked.
- February to April: weekly slot plus asynchronous marking. This is the engine room, and the overnight turnaround does most of the work.
- Spring or Easter break: the second intensive block, now entirely past papers under timed conditions.
- Late April into May: taper. Polish technique, rehearse timings, keep the contact light and steady.
Students sitting the November session shift the whole pattern about five months later, with the summer holiday becoming the main intensive window rather than a rest.
How to judge whether an online tutor is actually good
Ask these seven questions before you commit a year to anyone.
- Who teaches every session? One named specialist who knows your child, or whoever is free that week. A rotating roster cannot build the picture of a student that one-to-one teaching exists to build.
- Do they teach your exact course? IB Maths AA and AI are different subjects, and SL and HL are different again. "Maths tutor" is not an answer. Ask which papers, which options, which markschemes.
- Does the trial session involve teaching? A good specialist spends it diagnosing and explaining something, not describing their methodology. You should finish knowing more than you started.
- Do you get marked work back in writing? Verbal reassurance is not evidence. Annotated scripts against the real markscheme are.
- Are sessions recorded and available afterwards? If not, ask why not.
- Do they tell you what will not work? A tutor who tells you honestly that a Tuesday 6pm ET slot is a bad idea is telling you something valuable about how they will handle every other awkward truth, including how your child is actually doing.
- Can you see progress without asking? Notes, marked work, a clear read on the current grade and the realistic target.
